The icosahedral bacteriophage ΦX174 replicative form (RF) is a double-stranded circular DNA molecule of 5,386 bases. Restriction enzyme-digested ΦX174 DNA generates molecular weight size markers used in gel analysis of nucleic acids. ΦX174 DNA is often used in the assays of restriction enzymes for the presence of nickase activity.
